Mini Gallery Onoma Shop

Fiskars, Finland

In Fiskars you will eventually come across slag, which is a very typical material for the ironworks village. The dark bricks of the historical buildings are made from slag, but you may also find pieces of slag on the ground. Slag is a glass-like by-product of iron production, and can still be found in the grounds of the village today.

"After moving to Fiskars, this unusual material caught my attention and I started collecting it on my walks, until I soon realized that it was unavoidable to do something with it, as I previously had been working with stone. Slag pieces can be quite different in color, texture, and shape, and may contain cracks or inclusions of minerals and metals, making each piece unique.

Throughout history man has made objects for different purposes from found materials. Various beads were also used as a medium of exchange in different cultures. I wish to highlight the untapped local slag material, exploring value and its expressions, and the material's potential as a substance for arts and crafts."

art design exhibition spirituality

The Sense of Spirituality

1 – 4 Sep 2022

The Sense Of Spirituality – exhibition looks at spiritual phenomena in this time.

Spirituality is one of the central concepts of being human. Therefore, the absence of spirituality in western design during the past decades is is quite astonishing. Design with spiritual values opens up to external and internal changes, new possibilities and human emotions. When design adapts to changes, it is no longer a predictable technical performance, from which feeling and intuition have almost completely vanished. Part of spiritual design is openness through which change can enter.

The exhibition is curated by designers Piia Jalkanen, Päivi Keski-Pomppu and Susan Elo.

22 May - 4 Sep 2022

Onoma’s summer exhibition HIDDEN - Forms of the Senses, is a manifesto for multi-sensory experience.

On Sunday 22 May, Onoma’s summer exhibition, Hidden – Forms of the Senses, will open in Fiskars Village as part of the Fiskars Village Art and Design Biennale. Curated by Laura Sarvilinna, the exhibition deals with how the senses influence artistic work and the experience of art. The exhibition explores multi-sensory experience through art, design and craft. Hidden is a sensual exhibition, which is set up in a way that takes into account the possibilities and limitations created by our senses and bodies and the environment, from the perspective of both the artist and the visitor.

In the West, we have been making value judgements about the human senses since ancient times. The number of senses has changed, and over time, they have each been assigned a different importance in relation to our thoughts and actions. We live in a period of human history characterised by unprecedented amounts of information and sensory overload. At the same time, and perhaps precisely because of this, we have reduced our sensory sensitivity by only relying on our dominant senses. We have almost forgotten the importance of versatile sensory practice and multi-sensory experience.

For people doing creative work, multi-sensory experience is a prerequisite for the imagination and creative practice. It is a natural path from an idea, or perhaps a coincidence, to a finished work. The works in the exhibition are intended to be experienced holistically. They appeal to several senses simultaneously. In order to maintain a sense of truth and presence in our lives, we must take care of the interaction between our senses and consider their multidimensional nature.

Open 22 May – 4 September, 11:00-18:00 every day.

Kuparivasarantie 5, Fiskars, Raseborg, Finland.

Jewelry for Wars Untold (from “Untold Arctic Wars”an Yle Original series)

4 Feb 2022

I was invited to create jewelry for the music video of Wars Untold, which is the official theme song, written by Irene, for the war documentary series Untold Arctic Wars. This collaboration allowed me to continue exploring materials from my local surroundings, finding connections between current living environment, artistic practice and the documentary series. The jewelry was made from deer antler found in the woods of my home village. No animals were harmed, as the antlers had been shed naturally.

Untold Arctic Wars is a new generation war documentary series that explores the least known events of the second World War. It’s the first ever documentary to reveal the role of the Arctic nations in WWII, discovering the importance of the arctic region in the most violent war in human history. We need to be reminded of the frozen hell so that history will never repeat itself”. - Irene

The song and video was out 4th of February. The series, produced by Ntrnz premiered on February 14th on Finnish TV Yle. The video, shown as a trailer for the series, will be shown in other Nordic countries through SVT, NRK, and DR channels during the spring 2022, and is distributed to National Geographic channel through Walt Disney Company - first shown in Benelux countries.

Look Closer - Stones and jewellery

3-10.9.2020, Helsinki

The forests and shores of Finland are full of small gems. You may have noticed one on your walk and taken it with you, perhaps kept it as a memory of a place close to your heart.

In the exhibition designers have used different Finnish stone specimens found in the nature to create jewellery and small artefacts. The stones are given the spotlight they deserve and for example the everyday granite found all over the country is shown from a new point of view. The balance and relationship of metals and stones are carefully examined and worked on in the exhibition items.

Manufactured by traditional handcrafting methods, the works are unique pieces of art.

Artists: Minna Arponen, Elina Honkanen, Jaana Junkkaala, Päivi Keski-Pomppu, Fanni Laukkanen ja Theresa Storbacka.

The annual sales exhibition of the Finnish Jewellery Art Association at Kaapelitehdas, Valssaamo, in Helsinki. Open 7 - 15 of March, opening 6th of March at 17-19h.

Korutaideyhdistys ry tuo jälleen Kaapelitehtaan Valssaamoon suomalaisen nykykorun myyntinäyttelyn. Teosmyynnissä on esillä teoksia kaikkiaan 47 korutaiteilijalta eri puolilta Suomea. Korutaideyhdistyksen teosmyyntiin on koottu teoksia molemmista lähtökohdista esitellen yhdistyksen jäsenten monipuolista tuotantoa.

Tervetuloa avajaisiin 6.3. klo 17-19!
